I'd just like to say thank you. Every time I've asked a question, or had anything to discuss with you over the last year, I've always received a fast, polite, and informative reply.

I get the feeling that nothing is too much trouble, and I can actually talk to people who know exactly what's going on.

Our new broadband connection (Annex M) from you guys has made a substantial difference to our business. Uploads that were taking 20+ minutes to send are going up in half the time. Over a year this is really going to pay dividends, so thank you!

Quote I've been with ICUK now for over 3 years and have received a nothing but a perfect service. Your speeds have been consistently fast throughout the day and your panel allows me to easily keep track on my usage. I'm constantly hearing of other ISP's failing my friends, so hats off, I'm very happy!

What is Annex M?

Annex M is a derivative of the next generation of broadband connections supported through BT's 21st Century Network (21CN). Unlike Annex A ADSL 2+ which focuses on supplying the highest possible download speed, Annex M sacrifices ultimate download speed for a better upstream speed. The result is a reduction in download load speed from a maximum of 24Mbps, down to 16Mbps. The upload speed increases from a maximum 1.3Mbps to 2.5Mbps.

Availability of Annex M

All exchanges that are enabled for 21CN can receive the Annex M product. Please query our broadband checker for confirmation of whether your exchange can deliver this service to you, as well as confirmation of the predicted speeds for your line or area.

Will my router support Annex M?

Most ADSL routers which support ADSL 2+ should support Annex M. Some manufacturers have specifically designed their router to handle Annex M. If if doubt please contact the manufacturer or router documentation.

What other variants are there?

This table surmises the various ADSL technologies that exist to make it clearer where this new product fits in with other terms you may have heard before.

ADSL (fixed rate) We have now phased these products out. They were fixed ADSL speeds ranging from 256k upto 2Mbps with an upload speed of 256k.
ADSL Max (upto 8Mbps) These allowed rate adaptive download speeds of upto 8Mbps with options of 448k or 832k on the upload.
ADSL 2+ Annex A (upto 24Mbps) A new generation of rate adaptive broadband connections offering upto 24Mbps downloads and maximum 1.3Mbps on the upload.
ADSL 2+ Annex M By sacrificing some of the potential download speeds, these connections can support upto 2.5Mbps on the upload speeds.
Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) The next generation of broadband connections which sees the removal of part of the copper network being removed using fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) technologies. In doing so the speeds achieved are significantly higher at upto 40Mbps downstream and upto 10Mbps upstream. Further improvements in speed are expected, although the foot print is still relatively small.
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) Bypassing the street cabinet entirely, Fibre To The Premises will see a fibre connection installed directly to your building from the exchange. No copper phone cables means that the speeds will be initially a very impressive 100Mbps downstream.

IMPORTANT

Some of the following points may be considered obvious, but they are important to note:

  • ADSL broadband is not supplied with any form of warranty. It may take BT more than 24 hours to fix some problems.
  • For those operating mission critical applications it is always recommended that you consider a backup Internet connection or a more resilient solution with a service level agreement, such as a leased line.
  • ADSL is a contended service. As such latency and pings times can vary. We cannot make any guarantees regarding the speeds achieved.
  • Please do not make requests for part refunds, good will gestures, or free services in the event of less than desirable performances. We are unable to offer these. We will always ensure that any faults are dealt with quickly and efficiently, but sometimes we have to rely on our partners such as BT Wholesale which can delay matters.
  • The quality and speed of your ADSL broadband will be affected by your line. If you suffer from poor quality calls, crackles or any form of interference these are issues you must take up with your line rental supplier. They are outside of our influence and should be treated as voice affecting faults. Once addressed you may find that the broadband faults are also fixed.
  • No matter how tedious some of the questions we ask you may seem when fault fixing, we only ask for information that will assist in getting a quicker fix to your problem. Sadly BT Wholesale haven't developed any magical tools to fix problems within minutes, so the first step will be to fact find in order to discover the best way forward.

Enhanced Care Option - £15 Per Month

This solution is indispensable to any business that relies heavily on their broadband connectivity. Likewise if you only have a single broadband feed into your business, you are effectively left with a vulnerable single point of failure. Although this doesn't prevent disruption to your business in the event of a failure, it does ensure the swiftest possible response to resolve it.

Broadband Enhanced Care offers a 20 clock hour clear within BT Wholesale, a 4 hour response time, and is supported by an improved Service Level Guarantee. Out of hours engineering visits to site may be used to complete a repair if unrestricted access is available.

Broadband Enhanced Care offers a four hour response to reported faults and a Service Level Guarantee that an End User Access fault will be cleared within 20 clock hours of the service provider reporting it to the Service Management Centre (SMC). To achieve this, BT will ensure that engineers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to repair any End User Access fault covered by this product, providing that unrestricted access to the End User's premises is available.

Broadband Enhanced Care enables service providers to offer their customers a guaranteed 24 hour fault clearance promise, differentiating their products by offering an improved level of service. If this target is not met, ICUK will pay compensation of 50 per cent of the monthly End User Access rental. The guarantee will apply to each failure.
